Race of the Century- Athens 200m freestyle final
Still in keeping with the great anticipation for the London Olympics starting in 6 days time, I'd like to take you on a trip down memory memory lane. Setting: Athens Olympics 2004. Event: Final of the 200m Freestyle(Men) This was dubbed the Race of the Century! and it was possibly the greatest swimming race ever as it featured the 4 fastest swimmers in that event at the time. Australians Ian Thorpe(Thorpedo) and Grant Hackett, Holland's Pieter van den Hoogenband and USA's Michael Phelps. Thorpe was defending the title he won 4 years earlier, Phelps was on a mission to accomplish 7 gold medals at one competition, van den Hoogenband was the 100m world record holder. Thorpe won in an Olympic record time of 1:44;71, with van den Hoogenband clinching the silver and Phelps getting the bronze. Great race!
