Rashidi Yekini-the memories
Former Nigerian striker Rashidi Yekini died yesterday at the age of 48 years. He was very prolific as a striker- scoring goals with ease in every club he played for. He still holds the record of Nigeria's highest goalscorer (37 goals in 58 matches)
The gangling striker made his competitive debut for Nigeria during an Olympic qualifier in Dec 1983 but he really flourished in the National team under Coach Clemens Westerhof. His last game for the national team was in 1998.
He was top scorer in the Portuguese league (1993-94) and African footballer of the year in 1993-scoring an incredible 34 goals in 32 matches for unfancied Portuguese side Vitoria de Setubal( no mean feat if you consider how modest this club is in Portugal).
