The UEFA Super Cup: Bayern wins! Review & Thoughts- from a Chelsea fan

The UEFA Super Cup: Bayern wins! Review & Thoughts -from a Chelsea fan

Review

Phew! One word to describe that Spectacle at The Eden Stadium: KARMA!!

There was no way Jarvi Martinez scores that equaliser in the dying seconds of the match, otherwise!

The footballing gods must have been laughing when we thought we could nick that!

The Super Cup winner has alternated between the Holders of the CL and Cup Winners Cup/Europa yearly in the last 11 Seasons!!

It was our destiny to be on the losing end in 2 consecutive editions.

Mourinho set up his side in the traditional 4-2-3-1, which dynamically shifted to 4-4-1-1or 4-3-3 depending on defensive or counter-attacking needs

Crucially, he retained 'Rampard' (Lampard and Ramires) in the Pivot. A word on this later

Bayern played a 4-1-4-1 formation which turned into a 4-3-3 as required

Schweinsteiger and Thiago were unavailable due to injury and Jarvi Martinez wasn't fully fit. Hence ( strangely) Lahm was given the sole holding midfield role! while Rafinha played at RB.

Counter-attacking football was the right approach by Chelsea against the best team in the world- and it paid off beautifully early on as Torres scored a beauty from one of those moves. Swift brilliant play by Hazard, who found Schurrle on the right wing. The latter's accurate cross was met by a crisp volley by Torres. ( the finish was 2007 Torres-esque! )

We could have increased the lead later on 2 occasions -if his decision-making was better in the box.

In fairness, Bayern could have scored at the other end too with Alaba and Ribery getting a lot of joy on the left- Ivanovic was often isolated. Poor final ball and shooting ensured that we went in on the break ahead

Ribery got the goal that his general play deserved early in the second half but Cech will be disappointed at being beaten from such a long range.

Guardiola immediately deployed Martinez to secure the centre. Lahm shifted to his traditional RB and Rafinha was replaced

Bayern was on top thereafter for about 10 mins but Chelsea remained compact at the back and saw out that wave

Dante slipped at the other end and Schurrle threaded a pass to Oscar who tried to chip the ball into the net but was blocked by Neuer. He should have done better.

Chelsea swiftly found their Mojo back and could have taken the lead with their counter-attacking game. Ivanovic hit the crossbar from a corner. Hazard had a shot blocked by Dante. David Luiz momentarily looked like he'd grabbed the winner before Neuer clawed away his header.

Gotze came in for Mueller but the former was still match rusty

The game-changing moment was the red card to Ramires-after a second yellow card for a crude challenge on Gotze

It was always going to be difficult against Bayern with 11 men. It became even more daunting with 10.

This forced Mourinho to make the first change- bringing in Mikel for Schurrle. This changed the formation to a defensive 4-4-1, which became 4-2-2-1 at counter attack

With ten men, it didn't seem likely that we'd be able to seize the lead in extra time, but thanks to a clever ball by David Luiz, a cut inside by Hazard and a mistake by Neuer -Chelsea went ahead again in the 93rd minute. From then on, it was all hands on deck defending. Romelu Lukaku came in for Torres and ended up playing as a central midfield cum right back hybrid. John Terry was introduced for Hazard.

Cometh the man Cech!

Cech from Czech earning his Cheque!!

The big goalkeeper came up with brilliant saves against Ribery, Mandzukic and Martinez as the minutes ticked away, but in the dying seconds, with the last kick of the match, Gary Cahill lost Martinez and allowed him to smash home the equaliser after a deflection. Destiny!

We just couldn't hold on to the ball for about 10 mins prior to this goal. When you invite such pressure you're always going to be susceptible to such rotten luck!

Then came the lottery-Penalties!!

8 good penalty kicks from both sides. Cech got a hand to Shaqiri's kick but couldn't save it.

Lukaku missed Chelsea's last kick and Bayern got their revenge!

Thoughts

Positives

Much better performance compared to the debacle against Ath. Madrid last year

You won't get many easy goals against Chelsea this year. Mourinho has got it right in the defence

-The tactics yesterday (for most of the game) was spot on

Mourinho is still a great motivator. Players are willing to shed blood for him. Cue the 'crazed' determined look on Ivanovic's face during the extra time team talk

-We held our own against the current best team in the world...even with 10 men for nearly 45 mins! This Bayern team scored a combined 11 goals over 4 matches without conceding any- against Barca and Juventus last season!! I hope the Critics marinate on this!

-The prospect of Eto'o and Willian in this team is mouth-watering!!

-It was Lukaku's destiny to miss that penalty yesterday. His reaction after shows just how much he cares for the club. I hope the experience motivates him enough to do great things at this club

Negatives

-Rampard doesn't work in the pivot. QED

-Mourinho is playing Lampard to death!

-Creativity is sacrificed against good teams with this duo. I understand the concept of an experienced head as a calming presence but don't play Lampard for 120 mins!....or in every game!!

-Ramires has tons of energy but he's a poor passer and not particularly an intelligent tackler either. This meant that Bayern were able to recycle their attack easily after it broke down as our duo can't hold on to the ball and were second best with loose ball situations

This also meant that we couldn't exploit that weakness in the centre of the Bayern defence as much possible (Dante has lost form)

-Bring Oscar to the pivot, pair him with Mikel or MvG ( Marko van Ginkel) and watch this team transform.

Oscar tackles intelligently, is energetic and will be more effective as a No 4 than a No 10

-The best passer in this team is Mata. I don't care what anybody says, Mata deserves that No 10 slot. If our best player in the last 2 seasons is going to warm the bench then Mourinho should let him go to other clubs where he'll be appreciated

-Mourinho left his changes late yesterday. One could argue that he didn't want to make any changes until the red card. Once Pep made his first change I think Mourinho should have reacted too-bring in Lukaku for Torres, take out Ramires, switch Oscar to the pivot and bring in Mata to improve creativity in front.

- Agreed Mata is not the best tackler in the world ( so perhaps didnt deserve to start due to the tactics used by Mourinho) But that game was calling for Mata at that moment! -Ramires' clumsy challenge which led to the second yellow card was largely due to fatigue.

Once he got the red card, it wasn't the kind of game that called for Mata anymore.

-We ( Chelsea fans) won't get to see our darlings for some days now- due to the international break!

Blue is the colour, Football is the game, Chelsea is our name. CHELSEA!!

Chelsea vs Hull-My take

Chelsea vs Hull-My take

Summary: Got off to a blistering start, killed off the Hull City threat immediately without breaking too much sweat and napped their way through the back half of the game. Who's next?

How much is Mourinho loved in these parts? VERY MUCH!!

Did you see the joy from the fans as he came out of the Tunnel?

We're chuffed to have you back, Jose. We know the feeling is mutual too!

I'd say the first 25 mins is what Chelsea is about this season....we were thoroughly in control, running the Tigers ragged with careful possession play followed up by rapid vertical penetration whenever space opened up. They were also playing very physically whenever Hull did manage to get the back. Crisps short passes between Oscar, De Bruyne, Hazard, Lampard.......even Torres!

The striker had been playing well, linking up play between himself and the attacking midfielders until Torres became Torres again...heavy touches, largely anonymous in front of goal before he was replaced by Lukaku.

I'm not going to bore you with the details of the second half.

All told, it was difficult to get much of a feel for anyone -- we had a 2-0 lead against a team that looked incapable of reducing it. They held on without much bother although we'd have liked to have seen more goals ( e.g the Lampard penalty miss, the Schurrle fluffed chance)

No sweat. Someone is going to get a hiding from this club soon!- the type Barca dished out to Levante yesterday.

Just thinking about the depth in our team gives me goosebumps!! Odikwa serious!

Mata and David Luiz didn't feature. Both are not 100% fit. But we didn't really need them. We played Hull not Holland!. It's going to be horses for courses this season 'cos of our strength in depth

Hear @DaveBohh, a Chelsea fan: "Our bench makes me feel physically sick, it’s unfair to the other teams"

Chelsea looks like a Coke bottle right now- 'Thin' at the top, robust in the middle and sturdy at the bottom (back) Mourinho will sort out the 'weakness' in the Strikers department. For sure!!

On to the next one- Aston Villa in a couple of days. I hope Lukaku starts. Should be a great game.

Blue is the colour, Football is the game, Chelsea is our name. CHELSEA!!

Woof!!

Breaking Bad- quote of the day

Breaking Bad- quote of the day

Season 5 Episode 9: Blood Money

Hank has figured out who 'Heisenberg' is. Walter's cancer is back, Jesse is on a guilt trip

Quote of the day-Walter to Hank ( when Hank says he doesn't know who Walter is):

"If that's true; if you don't know who I am, then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly."

Quotes don't come more chilling than that!!

Orange Is The New Black

Orange Is The New Black

Stumbled upon this TV show during my Internet trawling 2 days ago. The first Season has ended and the next isn't till 2014

Saw a few episodes and really liked it

The story of Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after she is convicted of a decade old crime of transporting money for her drug-dealing girlfriend (Laura Prepon)

It's a dramedy (drama-comedy) you can identify with

From the likeable protagonist, Piper who is a debutante but has to blend with the seedy characters in Prison to survive (think bred in uppity Victoria Island meeting the Dregs from Ajegunle...interior! ) to dysfunctional characters and other incongruous pairings:

like Crazy Eyes ( Uzo Aduba- that's a very Nigerian name, by the way), the Tranny( Laverne Cox), the 'boss' in Prison, Red ( Kate Mulgrew)and dodgy Prison Officials

It's a multidimensional cast and you're taken back in each episode to get to know each of their stories.

Highly Recommended!!

Chelsea and Man City have to be the top contenders for the EPL title in the new Season.

Success in Europe?

The lack of a Marquee striker may be Chelsea's Achilles Heels there!

But we've got Mourinho .....that'll surely count!

Reminisce: Movies that we're still feeling-HEAT

Reminisce: Movies that we're still feeling-HEAT

Heat

How good was this 1995 American crime film starring Al Pacino (veteran LAPD cop Lt. Vincent Hanna) and Robert De Niro (professional thief, Neil McCauley) ?? Pretty good, I'd say!!

It's a bonus to have one of these great actors in a flick, it's pure joy to have both heavyweights in one film!
You still wonder whether a coin was flipped to determine who'd be Cop or Robber between them!

With a stellar cast that included: Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd and Tom Sizemore, Jon Voight....it's a Collector's piece!

Dysfunctional families, flawed individuals, love, betrayal...it had all!

The Bank Robbery scene was Mayhem and the dialogues were Muah!!

The dialogue at the Coffee table is legendary. It's full of quotes and cliches:

Vincent Hanna: You know, we are sitting here, you and I, like a couple of regular fellas. You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do. And now that we've been face to face, if I'm there and I gotta put you away, I won't like it. But I tell you, if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're gonna turn into a widow, brother, you are going down.

Neil McCauley: There is a flip side to that coin. What if you do got me boxed in and I gotta put you down? Cause no matter what, you will not get in my way. We've been face to face, yeah. But I will not hesitate. Not for a second.

Vincent Hanna: My life's a disaster zone. I got a stepdaughter so fucked up because her real father's this large-type asshole. I got a wife, we're passing each other on the down-slope of a marriage - my third - because I spend all my time chasing guys like you around the block. That's my life.
Neil McCauley: A guy told me one time, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."

The ending was apt! -It showed men on both sides of the law who still had mutual respect:
Mortally injured Macauley: I told you I'm never going back
Hanna with what looked like a pained look ( rather than a victorious one) after shooting him, says: Yeah

Sometimes words are not enough to describe a scene! Ha!!
Great flick!!

You Never Know With Women

You Never Know With Women

James Hadley Chase was the man back in 'em days!

Check out this quote by the Protagonist in 'You Never Know With Women' (one of his bestsellers):

"I’ve been around and I’ve known a lot of women in my time.
They’ve given me a lot of fun and a lot of grief.

Now women are funny animals. You never know where you are with them ; they don’t often know where they are with themselves . It's no good trying to find out what makes them tick. It just can’t be done.
They have more moods than an army of cats with lives, and all you can hope is to spot the mood you’re after when it turns up and step in quick.

Hesitate and you’re a dead duck, unless you’re one of those guys who like a slow approach that might get you somewhere in a week or in a month or even a year.
But that’s not the way I like it. I like it quick and sudden ; like a shot on the back!!"

Your thoughts?
